BVO is celebrating its 40 th Anniversary this year. On February 12, BVO we started the celebrations with our show-and-tell “Found Treasures” event at the Marsh Street Centre in Clarksburg. The community was asked to drop in and share a story, a photo, or a unique item that they purchased from our Treasure Shop in years past.
Forty to fifty people plus BVO volunteers enjoyed an afternoon of social fellowship and a proud display of true BVO enthusiasm. Our “Parade of Fashion” featured some amazing examples of found and repurposed clothing and accessories, and participants enjoyed a wonderful selection of food and drink, as well as plenty of opportunities to win prizes.
A number of Treasure Shop stories were shared that moved many to tears, including:
- A Treasure Shop youth worker who started volunteering at BVO by dressing
Barbie Dolls when she was a pre-schooler. She has been a paid summer
employee for the past two years under the Canada Summer Grant program. - A Ukrainian family new to the area who had to start all over again and found
many useful items. (The mother said that the best thing she finds in the
Treasure Shop is kindness.) - A young boy volunteered at BVO to get two Cub Scout community badges. He
was also recognized for “Boo Boxes” he distributed at Halloween to collect
money for BVO.
Our Found Treasures event proved that what we do at BVO is well worth the effort for
both the giver and the receiver. Thank you everyone for all your efforts in making it a
huge success!
